Penn State Protects Against Malcious Code With Symantec
University Standardizes On Symantec AntiVirus Solutions
CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 4, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Penn State, one of the leading academic institutions for higher learning in the country, has selected Symantec to provide Internet security solutions to the more than 36,000 desktops and servers that make up all of the school's computer network, including all campuses.
Under the terms of the three-year agreement, Symantec will provide Penn State with antivirus protection against malicious code at all virus entry points, including the desktop and server, along with technical support by Symantec's security experts. Products were sold to Penn State through Software House International, a global procurement outsourcing company and leading business-to-business solutions provider.
"For the purpose of accessing and facilitating information, the advent of the Internet has been a huge benefit to students, teachers and professors at all levels of the educational process, particularly for institutions of higher learning," said Gary Augustson, CIO and vice provost for Information Technology, Penn State. "However, we at Penn State recognize that if the Internet is to continue playing a vital role as an instrument for not only education but also for running the university, we must have a set of security policies in place to protect the information of the students, faculty and other employees that use our Web site."
"Just by the nature of how a college operates, not only as an institution for learning but as a community where students live and work, use of the Internet at universities such as Penn State is as ubiquitous if not more so than at any other institution in our culture," said Gail Hamilton, Symantec executive vice president. "In such a connected environment, protecting a network from cyber attack is a must. Symantec is honored to partner with Penn State to provide Internet security for their computer network and we look forward to serving them as a valued customer for years to come."
