FPL Completes Restoration to 97 Percent of Customers Impacted By Hurricane RitaRestoration update: Working in between feeder bands of heavy rains
and squalls, Florida Power & Light Company crews have restored service
to 122,600 customers in South Florida affected by Hurricane Rita. At 8
p.m., 3,400 customers remain without power; about 2,400 in Miami-Dade
County and 1,000 in Broward. FPL expects to essentially complete
restoration to all customers by Wednesday night with most of those
still out of service receiving power before then. A total of 126,000
customers have been affected by the hurricane, with 97 percent of
those restored within 24 hours.
Resources: Nearly 5,000 repair workers and support personnel have
been involved in the restoration effort, including more than 1,800
line crews and almost 900 tree trimming personnel. The company
deployed its own crews and contractors from other parts of the state
to its service centers in South Florida to restore power as additional
out-of-state utility workers are tied up repairing the devastation
left behind by Hurricanes Katrina and Ophelia. FPL already has
received requests to send repair crews to assist utilities in Texas
and plans on doing so following completion of the restoration in South
Florida.
Safety is our top priority: The company urges everyone --
customers and employees -- to continue to focus on safety.
-- Stay off the streets as much as possible after the storm to
enable crews to move about more freely and prevent traffic
conditions that could extend restoration times even more.
-- Stay away from downed lines, flooding and debris. Don't walk
in standing water and don't venture out in the dark because
you might not see a power line that could still be energized
and dangerous.
-- If you plan to use a portable generator, run it outside and
connect appliances directly. Do not wire your generator
directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power it
creates may flow back into power lines and cause injuries.
Customer information: If your neighbors have electric service and
you do not, please call FPL at 1-800-4OUTAGE to report it. Have your
account number or phone number available when you call and an
automated system will record your outage information. Once you've
called FPL to report your outage, a record will be created and it
won't be necessary to report your outage again. To expedite the
restoration process, we would appreciate if you leave telephone lines
open for critical calls.
Stay tuned to local radio, TV and newspapers for specific reports
on FPL's progress in repairing damage to the electrical system in your
area. You can also visit www.FPL.com for post-storm customer tips and
