FPL Crews Light up 87 Percent of Broward, Miami-Dade; Company Reiterates Updated Service Restoration DatesMIAMI, Aug 29, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- With main "feeder" lines serving large numbers of
customers essentially repaired and its focus today turned toward
lighting up neighborhood by neighborhood, house by house, Florida
Power & Light Company said that service has been restored to 87
percent of those impacted by Hurricane Katrina's rampage through South
Florida.
At a news conference this afternoon, FPL said it was on track to
getting the power back on for 90 percent of its customers no later
than Tuesday night - with many being restored earlier than that. All
affected customers in Palm Beach County had power by Saturday, and all
remaining outages are in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The company
said the large number of uprooted and toppled trees in many areas has
been the most daunting challenge to crews trying to restore service as
quickly as possible.
As it had stated earlier in the restoration, in some areas FPL
will have 100 percent of its customers back in service by tomorrow
night.
-- This includes all customers north of Commercial Boulevard in
Broward County and south of Eureka Drive, or SW 184th Street,
in Miami-Dade.
-- Also, Key Biscayne will be 100 percent restored by tomorrow
night.
FPL also reiterated more definitive restoration dates given
earlier today for some of the remaining customers in harder hit areas
that bore much of the brunt of Katrina's damaging winds and rain. It
reminded customers that many in these areas as well will see their
power restored before the announced dates.
The remaining 10 percent of customers that require more one-on-one
attention in some of the harder hit areas will have power restored
between Tuesday and Friday, as follows:
-- 100 percent of customers in the following areas will have
their power restored by Wednesday night:
-- Broward County north of Holly Hill Road, west of S.
Flamingo Road, and between I-595 and W. Commercial Blvd.,
west of the Florida Turnpike.
-- Miami-Dade County between NE 163 Street and NW 215 Street,
east of the Turnpike, and between SW 8 Street and Highway
112, east of I-95.
-- 100 percent of customers in the following areas will have
their power restored by Thursday night:
-- Broward County between NW 215 Street and W. Commercial
Blvd., east of Flamingo Road, and between I-95 and
Commercial Blvd. east of the Turnpike.
-- Miami-Dade County between SW 184 Street and SW 112 Street,
and between NW 74 Street and Holly Hill Road, west of I-75
and State Road 826.
-- Restoration will be completed in all remaining Miami-Dade
County areas between SW 112 Street and NW 215 Street by Friday
night.
