El Paso Corporation Pipelines Become 'Founding Reporters' of The Climate RegistryIndustry Leader Takes Action on Climate ChangeWASHINGTON, DC, May 07, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- El Paso Corporation (NYSE: EP) subsidiaries, El Paso Natural Gas
Company (EPNG) and Colorado Interstate Gas Company (CIG), have become
Founding Reporters of The Climate Registry by being among the first
to join the organization. The Climate Registry is a non-profit
organization established to measure and publicly report greenhouse
gas emissions (GHG) in a common, accurate, and transparent manner
consistent across industry sectors and borders. Thirty-nine U.S.
states, eight Canadian provinces, three Native American tribes, six
Mexican states, and the District of Columbia are the founders of the
organization.
"El Paso has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by
courageously stepping forward to support The Climate Registry in its
preliminary stages. We are deeply grateful for its integral support
in helping to address the challenge of climate change," said Gina
McCarthy, chair of The Climate Registry.
A leader in the interstate natural gas transmission industry, El Paso
has demonstrated environmental stewardship on several fronts by
voluntarily committing to quantify, independently verify, and publicly
report its GHG emissions on an annual basis, utilizing The Climate
Registry General Reporting Protocol. The protocol is based on
internationally recognized GHG accounting standards of the World
Resources Institute and World Business Council on Sustainability.
El Paso continues to serve with other experts from industry, the
service sector, environmental organizations, environmental consulting
firms, and local governments on The Climate Registry's Advisory
Committee, providing input on protocols related to reporting of
greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2007, El Paso Corporation successfully certified its 2006
California GHG emissions inventory with the California Climate Action
Registry, becoming the first company to earn the distinction of
Climate Action Leader(TM) for 2007 and the first company in that
registry's history to certify without a material error. Further, El
Paso has successfully submitted a third-party-verified emissions
report for its 2006 U.S. operations to the U.S. Department of Energy.
"We are proud that El Paso's Western Pipeline Group, including our
Colorado Interstate Gas and El Paso Natural Gas pipeline systems, have
joined The Climate Registry, helping to advance accurate GHG
emissions reporting," said Jim Cleary, president of El Paso's Western
Pipeline Group.
"As the nation tackles complex energy and environmental challenges,
natural gas will play an important role," according to Cleary.
"Natural gas has lower GHG and air emissions intensity relative to
other fossil fuels, and provides about 20 percent of all the energy
used in the United States today.
"El Paso has actively participated in the Western Climate Initiative
and the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (Assembly Bill
32) regulatory development process. We will continue to provide
industry leadership by participation in the development of future
comprehensive greenhouse gas programs, and membership in The Climate
Registry is one key aspect of our commitment," he said.
Entities that joined The Climate Registry before May, 2008, were
eligible to receive Founding Reporter status.
