DTE Energy is a leader energy and energy technology provider. We strive to maintain solid core utility businesses that deliver stable growth and strong cash flow. We have enhanced our growth rate by developing a portfolio of non-regulated businesses that are closely linked to our core utility business assets and skills.
Specifically, our non-regulated businesses include synthetic (coal-based) fuel production, on-site energy projects primarily for large industrial customers, coal transportation and marketing, asset-based energy trading, natural gas storage and transportation, landfill gas recovery facilities and energy technology businesses. We believe that our modest, staged investments in energy technology have the potential for attractive long-term growth. We operate with the philosophy of balancing growth with financial strength.
DTE Energy's utility subsidiaries are Detroit Edison and MichCon. Detroit Edison is the nation's seventh largest electric utility, supplying energy to 2.1 million customers in Southeastern Michigan. MichCon is the nation's tenth largest natural gas local distribution company, serving 1.2 million customers across Michigan.
